How to Set Up an Advantage+ Sales Campaign in Late 2026

MetaMaxd·November 2, 2026·6 min read

Somewhere in May 2026, Meta blocked the legacy Advantage+ shopping and app campaign types on the Marketing API, and a chunk of advertisers are still setting up campaigns like the old ones exist. They do not. Advantage+ now lives as a set of levers inside the normal Sales objective, not as a separate campaign type you pick from a menu and forget about.

This is, on balance, an improvement. The old setup hid too many decisions behind one toggle. The new setup forces you to make those decisions yourself, which is annoying right up until it saves your budget. Here is how to do it properly.

TL;DR

Create a Sales objective campaign and switch on the Advantage+ levers inside it, rather than hunting for a legacy campaign type that no longer exists. Keep each ad set at or under 50 ads, because that cap is real and your 51st ad will not save you. The old existing-customer budget cap is gone, so you control the prospecting versus existing split with separate ad sets, audience exclusions, and value rules, not a slider. And if you cannot explain what each ad set is for in one sentence, you have too many ad sets.

Step 1: Start with the Sales objective, not nostalgia

In Ads Manager, pick Sales as your objective. Inside the campaign and ad set settings you will find the Advantage+ options: Advantage+ audience, Advantage+ placements, Advantage+ creative, and the rest of the automation levers. Switch on the ones you actually want, one at a time, and leave the others alone.

This matters because the old campaign type bundled every lever together. The new structure lets you keep Advantage+ audience while turning off Advantage+ creative, for example, if you do not want Meta rewriting your copy. Treat each lever as a separate decision. "Turn everything on and trust the machine" is not a strategy. It is a shrug with a budget attached.

Step 2: Respect the 50-ad cap per ad set

Each ad set now caps at 50 ads. This sounds generous until you count. Three concepts times four hooks times three formats is already 36, and that is before you add the seasonal variants your team will inevitably request.

The cap is a useful constraint in disguise. It forces you to kill the weakest ads instead of endlessly appending new ones to a bloated ad set where the top two ads eat all the spend anyway. Before you add an ad, ask which existing ad it replaces.

A practical structure that fits the cap: two to four concepts, each with two to three genuinely different hooks, in one or two formats each. That lands you around 12 to 24 ads, with room to rotate in winners without hitting the ceiling mid-test.

Step 3: Replace the missing existing-customer budget cap

Here is the change that quietly costs people money. The old Advantage+ shopping campaigns let you cap the share of budget going to existing customers. That control is gone. If you run one big ad set and let Meta decide, existing customers will eat a share of spend you never chose, because they convert easily and the system loves easy conversions.

The replacement is manual, and it works fine once you accept it:

What you want How you get it now
Mostly new customers One ad set that excludes purchasers and engagers, with Advantage+ audience switched on for expansion
Existing customers only A separate ad set targeting purchasers and recent engagers, with its own budget
A deliberate split Two ad sets with two budgets, sized to the split you actually want

Yes, this is more ad sets than the old one-ad-set dream. It is also the only way to know what your prospecting actually costs, because a blended ad set reports a blended cost and lets cheap existing-customer conversions flatter your prospecting numbers.

Step 4: Set the boring foundations before you touch a lever

Advantage+ amplifies whatever you feed it. Feed it a broken catalogue, a misfiring pixel, or a conversion event that fires on page views, and it will optimise brilliantly toward the wrong thing.

Checklist before launch:

  • Purchase (or your real conversion event) is the optimisation event, not a proxy
  • Catalogue is current, with correct prices and no dead products
  • Pixel and Conversions API agree, or at least disagree by a small, stable amount
  • Landing page loads fast on mobile, where most of this traffic arrives
  • One clear offer per ad set, not three offers fighting for the same budget

Skip any of these and no amount of Advantage+ lever-fiddling will rescue the campaign. Automation multiplies inputs. Garbage in, garbage out, faster.

Step 5: Launch, then leave it alone for a useful amount of time

Give a new Sales campaign at least a week and roughly 50 conversions per ad set before you declare it dead or brilliant. Early results lie in both directions: a campaign that looks heroic on day two is often just cheap existing-customer conversions front-loading, and one that looks terrible may just be finding its footing. When you do intervene, change one thing at a time, or the result cannot be attributed to anything.

The honest verdict

The migration from legacy Advantage+ campaign types to Advantage+ levers inside Sales is not a downgrade. It is Meta admitting, quietly, that one toggle could not make every decision well. The price of that honesty is that you have to make the prospecting versus existing split yourself, respect the 50-ad cap, and stop pretending a blended ad set tells you anything about prospecting cost.

FAQ

What happened to Advantage+ shopping campaigns?

Meta blocked the legacy Advantage+ shopping and app campaign types on the Marketing API in May 2026. Advantage+ now works as a set of levers inside the standard Sales objective campaign.

How do I create an Advantage+ Sales campaign now?

Create a campaign with the Sales objective, then switch on the Advantage+ levers you want inside the campaign and ad set settings, such as Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements. There is no separate Advantage+ campaign type to select anymore.

How many ads can an ad set hold?

50 ads per ad set. Plan your testing inside that cap and rotate weak ads out instead of stacking new ones on top indefinitely.

Where did the existing-customer budget cap go?

It was removed with the legacy campaign types. Control the split now with separate ad sets: one that excludes existing customers for prospecting, and one that targets them for retention, each with its own budget.

Should I switch on every Advantage+ lever?

No. Switch levers on one at a time and only where you accept the trade. Advantage+ creative, for example, lets Meta alter your copy and visuals, which is fine for some brands and a brand-safety problem for others.

How long should I wait before judging a new Sales campaign?

At least a week, and ideally until the ad set has around 50 conversions. Anything earlier is mostly noise, especially when existing-customer conversions front-load the first few days.
